Recorded in 1969, year of the academics strike of Coimbra, Contos velhos rumos novos was published in full "Primavera marcelista" and stuck the hesitation of the totalitarian regime that then lived. It is the first album where Jos Afonso begin to draw, though timidly, other instrumental sounds in addition to the Rui Patos viola. Thus arose, although discrete, a harmonica, a ukulele, a trumpet and the voice of Teresa Paula Brito, in "Vai, Maria Vai". "Contos velhos rumos novos"is thus an anticipation of "Cantigas do Maio" that would be recorded two years later.
