Zanchetta, Stefano

Rozsa, Falik, Bloch, Barkauskas: 20th Cent. Solo Violin

The works recorded by virtuoso violinist Stefano Zanchetta in this Da Vinci Classics album are all for unaccompanied violin, and represent some of the most interesting voices of modern and contemporary music. The album opens with the Sonata by Miklos Rosza, who is best known for his Academy Award laureate film scores than for his "classical" output, but who wrote touching and effective concert works, appreciated by some of the finest musicians of the era. Yuri Faliks Composition for unaccompanied violin builds up successive climax of expressivity. Ernest Blochs two Suites for unaccompanied violin consist each of four movements, performed without intermission, and slightly reminiscent of Blochs background as a proudly Jewish musician. The album is completed by a miniature Partita written by Lithuanian composer Vytautas Barkauskas. It is in five short movements, where some of the best-known dances of the twentieth century are evoked, such as rhumba, blues, and beguine.
