Wilder, Larry/ The Dickel Brothers
The Americana Split
On Side A of this 7" split, National Yodeling Champion Larry Wilder directs his Appalachian yowl toward the lore surrounding Portlands original Voodoo Doughnut store. In a pun-filled ballad reminiscent of both "Weird Al" Yankovic and Jimmie Rogers, Wilder spins a tale of true romance and double entendre interspersed with his signature Voodoo Doll Yodel. On Side B, Portlands Dickel Brothers reunite for a doughnut song of their own. For Mamas Sweet Rounds, the Dickels recorded fiddle, guitar, banjo, mandolin, double bass and vocal parts all at once. The result is rich, holistic and mysterious, as if the song was recorded into a tin can in the 1930s...yet it is just as full of sly references to libidinous practices as the yodel number. Together, the Americana Split offers two very different yet equally pleasing takes on folk traditions as applied to pastry worship.
