Reel, Ben -band-
Live & Jj Smyths, Dublin 2013
Ben Reel is an Irish singer songwriter who performed in the Netherlands many times with his band. Operating a bit under the radar, his style of Americana has many influences from the blues. Live @ JJ Smyths Dublin was recorded in the famous, now closed, Irish blues and jazz club JJ Smyths and has 16 songs full of musical fun. In addition to own songs, two covers; The Beatles - it's a hard day night and Bob Dylans - Times they are changing. Also beautiful is the surprising adaptation of Who are you by the Who. Live at Smyths is a varied album with a lot to experience. The band Ben Peel joined includes himself and his wife Julieanne Black Reel (vocals), Michael Black (drums), Ronnie O'Flynn (bass), Mick McCarney (guitar) and John McCullough (piano, organ). The music that Ben Reel makes with his band is timeless and is so easy to listen to. He counts Bob Dylan and the Band as his great source of inspiration. The album might never have seen the light of day in normal times with Ben's busy touring schedule. But with enough time available due to the Covid lockdown, this album saw the light of day and that's a good thing because it's worth it. The live album mainly features songs from his 2013 album Darkness & The Light and some of his best songs from the previous 5 albums. Highly recommended for fans of Americana with a touch of blues and country.
