Kurt Schwitters; Die Ursonate

Central to this project is the text by Kurt Schwitters Die Ursonate, a Dadaist sound poem in four movements, written between 1923 and 1932. . Thomas Kruger has performed the Ursonate unplugged solo several times in the GDR since 1986. The re-appropriation and reception of Dada's aesthetic practice also played a role during this time. On the occasion of the centenary of Dada in 2016 he was invited by the Berliner Festspiele as part of the Theatertreffen Berlin 2016, to realise an extended version with jazz musicians. The result was the version composed by Anke Lucks for sextet (narrator and brass quintet), with which the ensemble has now performed more than 30 times - the concert at the Roulette in Brooklyn/NYC was honoured by the New York Jazz Association in December 2022 as Best Concert of the Year. For the jazz festival in Peitz in September 2023, the ensemble was expanded to a tentet (speaker and brass nonet). In this context the composition Gadjama, based on a text by Hugo Ball (Gadji Beri Bimba), was added. . The première was a great success with the public and so, after concerts in the country (supported by the Muh[sic] programme of the Musikfonds), this recording, which was made in the Rheinsberg Schlosstheater followed in spring 2024 (sponsored by the Berlin Senate).
