Her Journey: Flute And Piano Works By Women
This is an all-female album: the two performers are ladies, and so are all composers featured here. The journey we are invited to undertake is therefore a journey in female musicianship, and in particular in the flute and piano repertoire. The oldest piece recorded here is a Sonata by Mel Bonis, a French composer of the Belle Epoque. Her complex biography, where music, love, family, duty, depression, and creativity intertwine, is the background against which her extraordinary musical gifts blossomed. Her Sonata is framed by colourful and fascinating 21st-century works, including the Neo-Baroque Court Dances by Amanda Harberg, co-commissioned by 57 flautist from all around the world; Of Moths and Moonlight by Sally Greenaway; and Arabeska by Ewa Fabianska-Jelinska, a piece written for Ewa Kowalski who performs it here together with pianist Anna Rutkowska-Schock.
