Gregson, Clive
It's Only Love (2020-08)
In his extensive musical career Clive Gregson, although by now having written over 300 songs, has rarely written simply and directly about the universal emotion of love. Until now. His new album, It's Only Love - the 8th of all-original material in 2020 alone - tackles the human condition that is most widely experienced but surprisingly difficult to express. The lyrical range covers the whole range of facets of this tricky emotion, from commitment ('The Dawning of the Day'), loss ('Can't Keep From Crying'), hope in the throes of defeat ('Call Me') and regret ('Part of My Past') to joy ('You Lift Me Up').Musically, as always, this features Clive's talent across a wide range of genres, from pop-folk, to Americana ('No-one Else'), rock/blues, and even a calypso tinge ('Part of My Past'), and the assistance of Jez Smith of Barclay James Harvest on piano gives the album's closing ballad 'You Lift Me Up' a distinct feel of 'Bridge over Troubled Water'.
