One Last Hurrah For The Lost Beards
Pop in itself and almost by definition, some would say, has the curse of short-livedness and being outdated almost the next moment after it has been released onto the world. And Indie-pop then also gives itself the perception of simpleness and small size. So what do you expect really? People remembering Teenage Fanclub is already a big thing, and then take a look at how Evan Dando destroyed the old punkrock Lemonheads to reinvent himself as a guitar pop singer and what good did it do to him? (okay, so smack played another role in there as well.) The strangely titled "one last hurrah for the beards of pompeji" is no exception. Twelve songs filled with great refrains and melodies that should really do something for you to liven up any melancholic Sunday afternoon. And yes, it is raining outside. It has been raining yesterday and it will probably keep on raining until tomorrow. how perfect can a record fit a moment? And there are lyrics like "teardrops on my windowsill" on here as well as telephones that keep ringing and mountains where nonone ever goes and time going by without noticing. Sometimes Gary add strings and keyboards and female backvocals to their rather basic mix of guitar, bass and drums. Other times they rely on the good old dynamic of playing louder versus playing softer.
