Carlo Alessandro Landini: Piano Sonata No. 8

Italian composer Carlo Landini is famous for the monumental style of his works: this is a remarkably rare feature in todays musical world, and situates him in a very original and unique position. His Fifth Piano Sonatas lasts up to seven hours, and the Eighth, recorded here, is a broadly conceived, large-scale work inspired by the great masterpieces of the past. It resumes forms and genres of ancient music (including dances such as the Gaillarde, or contrapuntal forms such as the Ricercare) but reinterprets it in a novel fashion. This recording is historical also inasmuch as it preserves the very last concert of great Italian pianist Massimiliano Damerini, who died shortly after premiering this Sonata.
