Calhoun make lush, irresistibly melodic pop-rock, flecked with hints of alt-country, Heavy Sugar, from first track to last, is an assured collection of songs that only serves to reinforce just what an incredible songwriter vocalist Tim Locke is. Produced by James Barber (who's collaborated with Ryan Adams and Courtney Love in the past), Heavy Sugar moves easily from gorgeous, up-tempo ballads (Thrown in the Universe) to self-doubting soliloquies (Horsefeathers). There's a sweet song in there somewhere, sings Locke on Heart of Junk; although he's alluding to romantic longing, he could just as easily be talking about any of the 13 tracks on Sugar.
