Sometimes It Doesn't Work
Elegant, sensual and strong: this Swiss musicians music always works. Its always tempting to associate music with the place it was written. This temptation is allowed when it comes to Beautiful Leopard from Freiburg in Western Switzerland. Because this music is like its country: few on words, massive as a mountain cliff, and deep and high at the same time. And its beautiful. Beautiful like only a leopard is, and as elegant, sensual and strong, shy and reserved. Following the long tracks from the 2006 debut, the songs on "Sometimes It Doesnt Work" stick mainly to the classic three and a half minute pop song format . But they still manage to be epic, with polished arrangements and filled with warm atmosphere. In the past, one would have talked about slowcore and compared it to Codeine, Galaxie 500 or Yo La Tengo. You can also find traces of Mogwai, Sigur Ros and Bright Eyes. But Beautiful Leopard rises above such comparisons. In spite of the pessimistic title, this second album works. Just like Switzerland, like a leopard, beautiful.
