Bambino, Sekouba
The Griot's Craft
Even as a teenager the strong, soaring voice of Sekouba Diabate was known throughout his region of north-eastern Guinea that lies at the heart of the ancient Mande Empire. It wasn't long before word reched the capital and in 1983 he was asked to join the pre-eminent group of the time, Bembeya Jazz National. Most of his fellow band members were in their 40s, so you Sekouba was dubbed Bambino..the Italian for baby.Today Bambino is the pre-eminent singer of Guinea. Here he is stripped down to the bare minimum - which in Guinea, means 15 musicians - but all acoustic, all beautifully sympatehetic and all tight of the main event: Bambino's voice and his songs.
