2 - DEADMAN - LIVE AT THE SAXON PUB - (CD)
ROOTSY

The sextet clearly knows their milieu of Seventies folk rock, resurrecting the ghosts of the Band or Little Feet, with touches of the Grateful Dead, Crazy Horse, and Brothers both Allman and Flying Burrito. In other words, Deadman dives headfirst into the era and rather than try to really update it with any particular contemporary flourish, rightfully sticks with what works and simply raises it to their own exceptional level. The seven-minute jam of "If I Lay Down in the River" rolls with so much southern groove that it seems a complete anachronism, even shouting out to the Bands Cahoots with a chorus of "Life is a carousel , believe it or not. Life is carousel, two bits a shot." Likewise, the six-and-a-half minute "Love Will Guide You Home" slows the pace but doesnt let up on one bit on the fervent feel. This is music that almost forces your eyes closed and head to sway.

4 - DEADMAN - THE SOUND AND THE FURY - (CD)
ROOTSY

You can't kill a Deadman...Once again, Deadman rises from the ashes, stonger and more self confident than ever. The Sound and the Fury is the fifth Deadman album and it is a complete change of pace for DEADMAN, who has spent the last two major releases exploring traditional songwriting. With "The Sound and The Fury", DEADMAN returns to its earliest roots in delving straight into rock and roll and large themes that explore the current western culture. "In writing and recording Take Up Your Mat and Walk", I was interested in what songs sounded like recorded by a band with limited technology, just playing together with limited processing and organic instruments, very little effects on the guitars and etc. But with The Sound and The Fury, I became very interested in turning up both the volume and the energy. The studio became an instrument again. I wanted the record to be a cry in the wilderness of complacency, affluence and post-modernism." says Steven Collins"The Sound and The Fury" is the fully realized idea behind the prolog-like EP "How Shall We Then Live?". The two pieces go hand in hand thematically but with very different musical style. There's been a couple of Deadman band versions earlier. In the first years of the new millenium, Mark Howard (U2, Bob Dylan, Daniel Lanois, Lucinda Williams) produced two Deadman-album, Paramour (2001) and Our Eternal Ghosts (2004). At the time, Deadman was Steven Collins and his former wife. Both albums got great review, they toured extensily but soon both the band and the marriage collaped. After a move to Austin and a couple of years of songwriting, Steven Collins was ready for a new band. The 2.0 version recorded two albums Live at Saxon Pub and Take Up You Mat and Walk and did several tours in Europe before folding in 2012.Now Steven Collins is back with a new four piece band and a brilliant new album. Listen to The Sound and the Fury!
