276 - TAYLOR, CECIL -& TONY OXLEY- - CECIL TAYLOR CONVERSATIONS WITH TONY OXLEY - (CD)
JAZZWERKSTATT

Cecil Taylor, who died on April 5, 2018 in his hometown of Brooklyn, had a style all his own. With Ornette Coleman (1930 - 2015) he began in the 1960s to develop a music dominated by tone clusters and staccato notes that we later came to know as free jazz. The style icon on piano always began his concerts softly, slinking up to the instrument, murmuring texts to himself, almost dancelike, until the entire force of his playing style let the music's unique power resound. Here we have one of his last concerts from 2008, performed in the Chamber Music Hall of the Berlin Philharmonie. jazzwerkstatt had already begun impressively documenting the era of free jazz with the last recordings of Ornette Coleman (jw 090 'For The Love Of Ornette').We hear the last sound cascades from Cecil Taylor in 'Conversations with Tony Oxley'.

279 - TOM ARTHURS QUAIROS - VELA - (CD)
JAZZWERKSTATT

In Greek mythology, the word QUAIRS/Kairos refers to the opportune moment to make a decision which, when not used, can have adverse consequences. VELA, the sails of a ship, represent a constellation in the southern sky. The four musicians heard here chose the right moment to publish their music. QUAIRS creates marvelous sounds bridging jazz and avant-garde. Have a listen and decide for yourself!

JW 022 | STEVE LACY & MAL WALDRON |LIVE IN BERLIN .This CD looks back on two momentous events in the history of jazz: the only concert that the legendary Max Roach gave in the former East Germany and at Jazzb Berlin, the country's most important jazzfestival, which was held annually between 1977 and 1989. The 1984 concert brought together the internationally acclaimed trumpeter Cecil Bridgewater, who had been playing with Roach since 1971 and hence longer than anyone else, Odeon Pope, who had been in the ensemble since 1979 and who being experienced in free jazz had a lot to do with the most recent innovations, and the bass player Tyrone Brown, who had joined in 1983. All of them were excellent soloists. The quartet breathes new life into the once highly popular bebop themes 'Jordu' and 'Good Bait', making for a surprise in the latter with its introduction of the organic, yet original 3/4-time that was so typical of Roach. After an astounding anthem-like introduction, Coltrane's 'Giant Steps' turns into a crazy speed trip with a truly wonderful tenor solo and that unmistakable Max Roach solo style. Although 'Perdido', an Ellington swing number, fi ts the profi le of timeless modernism and allows everyone a solo. By contrast 'Six Bits' is an exquisite tour de force of musicianship. Here, Roach is the shouter with humorous, improvised lyrics, while Cecil Bridgewater demonstrates similarly comic gifts on the mouthpiece of his trumpet (reaping laughter and a special round of applause for weaving in a quotation from 'Struttin' with some Barbecue'). The tenor sax eventually joins in to create an imaginatively upbeat dialogue..JW 069 | MAX ROACH | LIVE IN BERLIN .This CD looks back on two momentous events in the history of jazz: the only concert that the legendary Max Roach gave in the former East Germany and at Jazzb Berlin, the country's most important jazzfestival, which was held annually between 1977 and 1989. If David Friesen weren't already held in high esteem as an instrumentalist and composer, you'd just have to pay him respect for the company he shares. He presents himself in the trio with the jazz legend Clark Terry and the last month decedent Bud Shank, one of the key fi gures of the west coast jazz. After listening to the virtuosity and imaginativeness displayed in these selected standards and a blues tune, you'll probably agree that this unlikely crew doesn't need no rhythm section.

FMP 129 | ALEXANDER VON SCHLIPPENBACH |PIANO SOLO '77 .Berlin 1977 - a recording studio, set up by Jost Gebers - No windows, only electric light and absolutely insulated from the outside world. Under such circumstances, out on my own in every respect, I was able to really focus, pushing my playing forward, and taking myself right to the edge with regards my improvising capabilities at that time. Listening to these recordings today, after thirty years, it seems to me that in the end I was in the grip of a competition with myself, trying to physically squeeze out the last drop. But, at the same time, what can be found in these piano improvisations - and this seems essential to me - is something of this feeling of moving on in which I found myself involved at that time. If this were to somehow get across to the listener, it would suit me just fine. Alexander von Schlippenbach.FMP 133 | STEFAN KEUNE/HANS SCHNEIDER/ACHIM KRAMER | NO COMMENT. Both in the area of Jazz as well as in improvised music, the saxophone-bass-drum trio is regarded as the power formation par excellence: raw, direct, no frills, reduced to the minimum in order to get out the maximum of power. This line-up allows the interleaving of two instruments - in the classic case, the two time keepers - in order to propel the third instrumentalist, the saxophone player right out to the fore. This trio can be seen as an isosceles triangle, as an optimal constellation offering plenty of possibilities for interaction, at the same time excluding the possibility of one player hiding behind the others. In fact their music is so open, confi dent and so deeply relaxed that they can be classifi ed within the big historic framework - with Albert Ayler, Gary Peacock and Sunny Murray at its beginnings. And this is in fact the strength of free music that its protagonists, no matter how disjointed, see themselves as part of this continuum and do not betray its tradition. .FMP 134 | PETER BROTZMANN | LOST & FOUND.Peter Brotzmann is an old fashioned modernist, something which would have been impossible to write thirty years ago. But that's what he was even then, even though at that time you were either oldfashioned of modernistic. The modernist was against the establishment, ie. against the old-fashioned. It is no longer like that today. Instead of this we speak of 'Postmodernism'. Or of Contemporary Art. And what does this mean? That art and music keep in time with time. There are no more directions in art, only 'trends'. The old-fashioned modernist defies conformism. There is no space for banality in Peter Brotzmann's music. He rids the music from old habits. Time and again

JW 073 | DAVID MURRAY | LIVE AT THE LOWER MANHATTAN OCEAN CLUB .I remember being at this concert, for one thing it was a new place though it left with such swiftness that I' m not certain many remember it. And so the concert itself was wrapped in a fond freshness, as trendy as the word had become back then. But it was the music that all had trekked there for, that expectancy in these yet earliest days of David's New York incarnation, that he was expresser of something still being born. This record as the replicated context of a time and the expression of that time and that place, NYC 1977 is the intellectual prcis of what has gone past to bring us into that present and , as well, notice of important music to come. And so we have the great music David Murray continues to make today, although this record makes us remember, as well, three great musicians we wish were still here. Amiri Baraka.JW 114 | JOHN LINDBERG'S TRIPOLAR | [A] LIVE AT ROULETTE, NYC .Tripolarity, a clear extension of bipolarity and its inherent ramped-up link to mood swinging, adds a dimension that is steeped in the selection of the personalities representing the polarities and results in an overall musical message that by its innate construction "mood swings its collective ass off." TriPolar represents a triangulation of creative energy that is ever-shifting and intensely engaged in the moment at hand...therefore this live recording gives the listener a large taste of the band's dynamic. There is no treatment or medication regimen for TriPolar, most decidedly not, as it is not a disorder, but in fact, all is in order...therefore a state of being to be divinely celebrated and reveled within at each given opportunity. So there you have the natural design and reason behind the creation of this ensemble and the making of this album. We are free to unhurriedly be TriPolar, without fretting, or having seething desires...as the trees of our youth continue to be annihilated and we are surrounded by an increasing horde that seem intransient addicts of cesspool level modalities of existing, we play on, we play on...we will play on...in hope, healing intention and good fun..JW 124 | LESTER BOWIE w./ WILLIAM PARKER, PHILLIP WILSON | (2 CD)THE GREAT PRETENDER Lester Bowie ventured to bridge the gap between tradition and avantgarde, between pop and innovation. Where others got lost in no-man's land, he found himself again in the continuum of Afro-American music. Blues, jazz, rhythm & blues, spirituals, gospels, the return to the African sound and the bold desire to pursue something new. The Chicago Association for the Advancement of Creative Music / AACM, which Lester Bowie joined in the sixties, described it with those magical phrases 'Ancient to the Future' and 'Great Black Music'.
