1 - BEETS, THE - PLAY SILVER NICKLES AND GOLDEN DIMES - (7")
HARDLY ART

THE BEETS' music has been heralded as "folk," "garage," and "punk," but it is not quite any of those things. It's just good American rock, an ideology they strive to carry on with. It's all about the songs, the way they are played and the way in which the message is carried. It has always been about that and THE BEETS understand that. Their lyrics are dark but handled sensibly, not preaching but giving advice on not following advice...or doing as they do, but not really. You see how it can get confusing! One thing's for certain of THE BEETS from Queens, NY: respect isn't something you get, it's something you take. On these new sounds of theirs, THE BEETS offer two songs by their God, Howard Stern. On one side you get the immediate-sounding "Silver Nickels and Golden Dimes;" a pre-punk nugget handled by THE BEETS in the fashion that it should be. The flip side is the more mellow, gentle "Psychedelic Bee", sung sweetly by Chie Mori. It's delicate, delightful, and wistful. Limited pressing on black vinyl, with artwork by Matt Volz!

2 - CHAMPION, JENN - SINGLE RIDER - (LPD)
HARDLY ART

Fans of Jenn Champion (formerly "S") have praised her open-hearted lyrics, expertly-deployed melancholia, technical skill, and willingness to forgo conventions, but mostly they've praised her for making albums they could cry to. With the release of Cool Choices in 2014, Champion made what many considered the best record of her career, and a lot of people cried to it. On Single Rider, Champion brings with her all those skills and vulnerabilities, but it is not a record for wallowing: it is a record for intense eye contact on the dancefloor.

5 - CLEVELAND, SHANA - NIGHT OF THE WORM MOON - (LP)
HARDLY ART

Shana Cleveland has been beguiling listeners for years in her role as the superlative frontwoman for elastic surf rockers La Luz. Now Cleveland is evolving her sound on the new solo full-length Night of the Worm Moon, a serene album that flows like a warm current while simultaneously wresting open a portal to another dimension. As much a work of California sci-fi as Octavia Butler's Parable novels, Night of the Worm Moon incorporates everything from alternate realities to divine celestial bodies. Inspired in part by one of her musical idols, the Afro-futurist visionary Sun Ra (the album's title is a tip of the hat to his 1970 release Night of the Purple Moon), the record blends pastoral folk with cosmic concerns. Abetting Cleveland during the recording process was a familiar gallery of co-conspirators: multi-instrumentalist Will Sprott of Shannon & the Clams, original La Luz bassist Abbey Blackwell, Goss, pedal steel player Olie Eshelman, and Kristian Garrard, who drummed on Cleveland's previous solo effort (with then-backing band The Sandcastles), 2011's Oh Man, Cover the Ground.

7 - GEM CLUB - IN ROSES - (LP)
HARDLY ART

The band-singer/pianist Christopher Barnes and his collaborators, cellist Kristen Drymala and vocalist Ieva Berberian-create music that is intimate, graceful, and filled with melancholy. For the new "In Roses", arriving January 2014 from Hardly Art, GEM CLUB have ventured beyond the isolation of the bedroom to record in San Francisco at John Vanderslice's analog studio Tiny Telephone, choosing to record entirely to tape. Barnes worked closely with arranger and conductor Minna Choi of The Magik*Magik Orchestra, who, Barnes says, "helped reshape the new songs in fresh and unimagined ways," The resulting album is more expansive, more majestic, than prior GEM CLUB releases. There are spacious, grand flourishes-the church-choir voices on "Idea for Strings"; the reverberating drumbeats that propel the melody of "Braid"-yet the music retains the intimacy of previous works.

TRACKLISTING: 01. [nowhere] 02. First Weeks 03. Michael 04. Hypericum 05. Idea For Strings 06. Soft Season 07. Qy2 08. Speech Of Foxes 09. Braid 10. Marathon (in Roses) 11. Polly

8 - HAUSU - TOTAL - (LP)
HARDLY ART

We've thought a lot about rock-music. One selects one's influences and moves from there, a process made simpler in the networked age. The result often resembles a collage, unified by the aesthetic leanings of its maker. Music writers and peers in conversation map out the references and citations made by their favorite new bands - "just like early SST punk" or "frigid cold-wave resembling." As musicians in 2013, we wanted to produce a record of many thoughts and feelings without abandoning the time-tested format of rock-music. We were less interested in "resembling" our favorite bands and songs than in searching for the small, indescribable things within that made them special. We wanted to make plain the conditions of rock-music's existence and how it could be formed. In doing so, we sought to produce a substantive, affective entity beyond a series of reference points. We've participated in a feedback loop. Our band was born between March 1991 and July 1992 but formed in 2010 while attending college in Portland. We started as many do, with a desire to write and play songs to and for our friends, evolving slowly, ever-mediated by our academic schedules. What Hardly Art will release this summer is a collection of songs written step-wise in Portland, Seattle, and Los Angeles between March 2011 and January 2013, recorded at YU Contemporary in Portland by Dylan Wall. "Total" then serves to document the evolution of our experience, to be understood in spite of and indebted to our time in school. Our tastes have changed and the emotions that informed earlier songs have faded into memory. In any case, music listening and playing has always remained crucial. As a result, our record is an assemblage of observations made by four different people collected in one place. As a public document, "Total" allows us to extend ourselves into a broader dialogue. The beauty of rock-music lies in the expanse of terrain that it encompasses as a definition. "Total" aims to acknowledge that freedom; it is at times melodious and at others dissonant, all in all, a finished product, a totality.

10 - HUNX & HIS PUNX - STREET PUNK - (LP)
HARDLY ART

LP includes downloadcode. HUNX AND HIS PUNX have returned with Street Punk-a new album filled with the catchiest and most hateful punk songs heard in eons. "Street Punk" is an unrelenting tour de force, echoing early 80s Hardcore, 90s Grrl sounds, Darby Crash on helium, and the female answer to The Misfits. After members dropping like flies and moving around the country, HUNX AND HIS PUNX is now led by Seth Bogart and Shannon Shaw, who split songwriting and vocal duties. In the years since their last album, 2011's "Too Young To Be in Love", Seth recorded a solo album called "Hairdresser Blues" (2012) and started a homemade TV Show called Hollywood Nailz, while Shannon released "Dreams In The Rat House" (2013) with her other band SHANNON AND THE CLAMS. Somehow during all of this Seth and Shannon managed to secretly meet in Los Angeles and Oakland to gob out "Street Punk". Recorded in just a couple days by Facundo Bermudez (who has produced albums by MIKA MIKO and NO AGE), "Street Punk" includes a cover of the BEASTIE BOYS' early hardcore anthem "Egg Raid on Mojo" and songs about bad skin, teen angst, social wimpery, trash, isolation, schizophrenia, peroxided delusion, rat parties and vengeance.

TRACKLISTING: 01. Bad Skin 02. Everyone's A Pussy (fuck You Dude) 03. You Think You're Tough 04. Born Blonde 05. I'm Coming Back 06. Mud In Your Eyes 07. Street Punk 08. Don't Call Me Fabulous 09. Rat Bag 10. Egg Raid On Mojo 11. Kill Elaine 12. It's Not Easy

13 - JULIE RUIN, THE - HIT RESET - (LPD)
HARDLY ART

"Hit Reset" expands on the band's established sound: dancier in spots and moodier in others, with girl group backing vocals and even a touching ballad closer. Hit Reset is the sound of a band who have found their sweet spot. Kathleen's vocals are empowered and her lyrics are as pointed and poignant as ever. From the chilling first lines of "Hit Reset" ("Deer hooves hanging on the wall, shell casings in the closet hall") to the touching lines of "Calverton" ("Without you I might be numb, hiding in my apartment from everyone / Without you I'd take the fifth, or be on my death bed still full of wishes"), Hanna takes a leap into the personal not seen completely on the first album or possibly even in the rest of her work.

14 - LA LUZ - FLOATING FEATURES - (LPD)
HARDLY ART

Los Angeles has often been described as a "dream factory"--both a mecca where dreamers converge to pursue long-held aspirations, and a topography of hallucinogenic contradictions: enchanting tangerine sunsets diffused by smog, crystal-clutching spiritualists mingling with deep-pocketed narcissists, rows of scenic palms competing with garish billboards for commuters' attention. It was against this backdrop that the four members of La Luz--singer/guitarist Shana Cleveland, drummer Marian Li Pino, keyboardist Alice Sandahl, and bassist Lena Simon-conceived of Floating Features, the band's third studio album. For this, their most ambitious release yet, La Luz consulted landscapes both physical and psychological. References to dreams abound on Floating Features.

15 - LA LUZ - IT'S ALIVE - (LP)
HARDLY ART

LP includes download coupon. Seattle's LA LUZ runs cool. Their brand of coolness isn't about distance or affect; it's a mood, and something about this music vibrates to the dusky, dreamy smell of dying moons and shadows. So yeah, that kind of cool. What makes La Luz stand out is that this is a band that embodies that most elusive slant on the human condition: longing, and the fleeting relief that tags alongside deep desire. In Spanish, LA LUZ means "light" and that's the perfect thing to evoke when your songs give the illusion of veering in the opposite direction. But lift out most any lyric-which is a good excuse to give a closer listen to the delicate, four-part harmonies that are fast becoming the band's signature-and you'll find that the aches and pains of love and loss, of living in a world where no foothold is ever a promise-all this is delivered with a nuanced dose of perfectly timed exhilaration, like the whole thing might just be worth it in the end. Last spring LA LUZ went to a steamy trailer park to record their debut LP "It's Alive" with their friend and engineer Johnny Goss. From the first get-psyched drum roll and eerie chords of "Sure As Spring", the dinged-up pop gem that opens the album, the rest moves like a slow drive on a dangerous road, slinking and bending as the terrain shifts. On "What Good Am I?", the lead vocals, and the swirl of harmonies that surround it, recall the Spartan haze of MAZZY STAR's misty-eyed super hit. Smack in the middle is the title track. "It's Alive" is a jangly rocker with a spooky refrain, oodles of ooohs, and a marauding narrative that nails down the misty logic of the rest of the album. Two instrumentals, "Sunstroke" and "Phantom Feelings", showcase the band's beach jam surf chops, and fall perfectly between the chilled out heartache that surrounds them.

TRACKLISTING: 01. Sure As Spring 02. All The Time 03. Morning High 04. What Good Am I? 05. Sunstroke 06. It's Alive 07. Big Big Blood 08. Call Me In The Day 09. Pink Slime 10. Phantom Feelings 11. You Can Never Know

17 - MOONDOGGIES, THE - ADIOS I'M A GHOST - (LP)
HARDLY ART

LP inlkusive Downloadcode. To shift shapes, much less become shapeless, THE MOONDOGGIES had to change: their line-up, the way they communicated, recorded, and wrote. They would have to push beyond the public pigeonhole of being a bearded band from Seattle singing in harmony to give the breadth of their influences a space in the spotlight. For "Adis I'm a Ghost" they drew from a diverse list of musical influences from Pink Floyd to Blonde Redhead, Mississippi John Hurt to Nirvana. Though they are oft compared to Laurel Canyon crooners or Southern swamp boogiers, "Adis I'm a Ghost" is a quintessentially Northwest record. It speaks, with more than words, of tumultuous transformation -- changing pace as often as the weather on a Seattle spring day. Musically and lyrically, it balances light and dark, marrying the boisterous blues of their debut album Don't Be a Stranger, the symphonic sadness of Tidelands, and a temperamental timbre previously unheard from the band. Recorded with producer Ryan Hadlock at Bear Creek Studios.

20 - STUSSO, DICK - IN HEAVEN - (LPD)
HARDLY ART

That old blues hound dog Bonnie Raitt probably sang it best and most lucid in her timeless, pedestrian hit "Nick of Time": "Life gets mighty precious when there's less of it to waste." And so now, her wise lyrical turn seems to be ringing true for Oakland muso Dick Stusso. When we last caught up with this Bay Area BBQ gaucho on his debut, "Nashville Dreams", he'd hit that special zen layer of loserdom. He'd thrown up his hands into the folly of failure. He was the affable, bumbling red-cheeked drunk lurking around the edges of the cookout - bumming smokes, putting down all the white wine and cocktail shrimp he could get away with. But now, a couple years on, that early-30s existential dread has crept its way into Dick's purview. With his sophomore long-player In Heaven, Stusso's numbered human days are on his mind. Without stumbling into pomposity, Dick has taken back the wheel on his life and is doing a bit of hotdogging. The album sounds so assured, you'd never guess the whole endeavor was almost completely down the tubes. "I was about 75% done with the album and then my apartment got burgled," Stusso said of In Heaven's bummer origins. "They took it all." Having laid it almost exclusively to tape, there weren't even files to pull from. But what seemed like another sour turn for Dick actually ended up being a little lemon zest in his G&T. He ended up teaming with psych visionary producer Greg Ashley in a defunct old church, making for a leap in fidelity on In Heaven. The new peacock strut to Dick's vague longing and malaise suits his countrified T. Rex sound quite well. Exhibit A: album standout "Modern Music," a sort of State of the Union and State of the Soul all set over a warm, gauzy glam bass line.
