1 - BOYCE, R.L. - AIN'T THE MAN'S ALRIGHT - (LP)
SUTRO PARK

R.L. Boyce has been wanting to make this record for decades. He has backed the greatest hill country legends, from Jesse Mae Hemphill to Otha Turner. He has played in and around Mississippi since he was a child. But this master at blues improvisation.at the picnic groove.this artist whose sound is truly like no other.has never been put onto tape effectively until now. On one hot and steamy Mississippi weekend, R.L. gathered his friends and played his heart out, the first day right on his porch, with the whole neighborhood gathering around, the second in Jim Dickinson's legendary Zebra Ranch studio. The cast of characters on this record is just mind-blowing Luther Dickinson, North Mississippi All-Star and Black Crowe guitar slinger, heads the band, displaying why he is considered one of the best slide guitar players in the country. Calvin Jackson-Junior Kimbrough's drummer and Hill Country foundation. Playing for the first time ever-with his son and R.L. Burnside's grandson Cedric Burnside (two full drum kits). Otha Turner's grandson Andre Evans joined Calvin on day 1, while Lightnin' Malcolm provided the sauce that he has become known for.

4 - BURNSIDE, R.L. - SOUND MACHINE GROOVE - (LP)
SUTRO PARK

Recorded by folklorist David Evans in 1979 and 1980, these are Burnside's first recordings with electric guitar and also his first with a band. That band was the Sound Machine, a band he literally created himself out of members of his own family, blending raw Mississippi blues with soul, funk, R&B, contemporary beats and other urban flavors to make a marvelous amalgam of his own. Especially notable is a version of "Sitting on Top of the World" with Burnside on slide guitar that, with Jackson's help, neatly evokes the sound and feel of a fife and drum band. Although Burnside became the darling of the blues crowd and hailed as something of an overnight success, one listen to this disc tells you he was already forging a new chapter in the Mississippi blues tradition with these recordings. Well, well, well.

5 - ELECTRIC PRUNES, THE - STOCKHOLM '67 - (LP)
SUTRO PARK

180 gram gatefold LP. In the winter of 1967, a psychedelic-garage-punk band from Woodland Hills, California, arrived in Europe for what would be their first and last tour of the continent. On the strength of their hit single "I Had Too Much To Dream Last Night," the band was welcomed with open arms by European rock fans as well as British rock royalty - they smoked out with Hendrix, partied with Brian Jones and Keith Moon, and hung out in the studio with the Beatles - but were also subjected to harassment and ridicule over the fact that their homeland was at war in Vietnam. On the last stop of the tour someone pushed the record button and this artifact is the result. Stockholm '67 finds the Electric Prunes at the height of the powers. Over-amplified and fuzzed to the max, the 'Prunes here are explosive, noisy and wild. This recording proves that the Electric Prunes deserve to be ranked alongside the very best bands of their era.

6 - HEMPHILL, JESSIE MAE - FEELIN' GOOD - (LP)
SUTRO PARK

Jessie Mae Hemphill was at the peak of her recording and touring career when these tracks were recorded in 1987. Those who were lucky enough to catch one of her live performances saw something utterly unique in the world of blues. Jessie Mae-The She Wolf-was the Queen of Hill County blues and Feelin' Good was the quintessential recording, finding her in the studio with legendary musicologist David Evans and Otha Turner band member RL Boyce. The result was one of the great Hill Country records, full of loose, infectious grooves and great, gritty song writing. Jessie Mae Hemphill came from a long line of blues greats, including her grandfather Sid Hemphill, who Alan Lomax recorded. Feelin Good never felt so good.

7 - HOWELL, PEG LEG - THE LEGENDARY... - (LP)
SUTRO PARK

Peg Leg Howell was a forgotten, impoverished blues artist when musicologist George Mitchell recorded him at age 75 in 1963. It is these recordings that make up The Legendary Peg Leg Howell record originally on Testament. But Peg Leg was actually part of the original wave of blues recording artists, recording for Columbia in 1926. His story is like many: when success proved illusive, he turned his back on music and settled for bootlegging and other types of work until rediscovered in the 60s. By then, he was old and fragile.qualities that translate beautifully on this quiet, haunting record that would be the bookend to a recording output that was tragically small but truly rich. The Legendary Peg Leg Howell is a sonic novel, filled with storytelling, drama, history and sadness. Hope and compassion. It is a classic. Reissue includes amazing front cover woodcut of Peg Leg.

8 - KIMBROUGH, JUNIOR -WITH THE SOUL BLUES BOYS- - DO THE RUMP! - (LP)
SUTRO PARK

In 1979, historian David Evans, a professor of music at the University of Memphis, chanced upon Junior Kimbrough playing at Ethel's Juke Joint in Holly Springs. The sides would be compiled for Junior's first full-length album, Do The Rump!. The result has become hill country legend, and his band, featuring Calvin Jackson on drums (father to Cedric Burnside and one of the most rock steady drummers of all time), created a sound that launched a whole new generation of blues fans. 11 - MCDOWELL, FRED -& ANNIE MAE MCDOWELL- - MY HOME IS IN THE DELTA - (LP)
SUTRO PARK

These recordings, made in 1963-64, showcase Fred McDowell in his prime. As recorded by Peter Welding, My Home Is In The Delta finds Fred and his wife, basking in the blues and gospel. Unlike Amazing Grace, which was also originally released by Testament and reissued by Sutro Park, this album is barer...a little more raw and personal....as if Fred was in a room right next to you playing the blues with his slide style that set the pace for everyone who came after. 12 - MCDOWELL, FRED/FURRY LEWIS - WHEN I LAY MY BURDEN DOWN - (LP)
SUTRO PARK

This amazing artifact showcases two intimate recordings with two of the legends of the blues. Furry Lewis and Fred McDowell were recorded in their homes in the late 60s and Biograph lovingly originally released the recordings as a split record. Both artists rise to the occasion, creating laid-back stylings of some of their most famous songs ("John Henry", "Casey Jones", "When I Lay My Burdens Down") as well as material not as readily available anywhere else. This is the first opportunity to buy this release since it was first put out over thirty years ago.

14 - MUDHONEY - HEAD ON THE CURB - (LP)
SUTRO PARK

This vinyl-only release is mid-period Mudhoney at its rawest. Original bass player Matt Lukin is in top form, as is the rest of the classic lineup, blasting out songs and ideas, some of which went on to be studio-fied for their Warner Bros. debut Piece Of Cake, while others got lost to the dark crevices of time.until now. Besides the cover of SCTV classic "I Hate The Bloody Queen", these recordings have never been released, and represent a sonic assault that is pure Mudhoney. Raw, unabashed, and sometimes downright no-fi. Head On The Curb writes a new chapter into Mudhoneys legendary past.

17 - VARIOUS - LIVE AT THE BOOTLEGGERS... - (LP)
SUTRO PARK

Live at the Bootleggers captures a moment in time, and a place in history when community was created around the buying and drinking of illegal liquor....moonshine....white lightening... It was recorded live at a bootleggers homebase in Fayette County, Tennessee in 1971 at the behest of Lattie Murrell, whom Bengt Olsson and Bill Barth had tracked down to document. Besides Murrell, Barth and William Floyd Davis, the contributors to this record just happened to be spellin with the same bootlegger that evening; they are unknown voices, arising with glory from the soak of moonshine, and then fading back into obscurity.

18 - VARIOUS - WOLF'S AT THE DOOR: LOST RECORDINGS - (LP)
SUTRO PARK

... From The Spirits Of The South. While the Rolling Stones and Eric Clapton helped the world rediscover Muddy Waters and Sun House, blues obsessives like Bengt Olsson traveled to America in search of the fringe players who helped define the genre in the 30s and 40s. These masters, many barely recorded, quickly faded into obscurity when their medium left them poor, wolves at the door. What Olsson captured was a robust slice of haunting blues and gospel that would have otherwise been completely forgotten. Ashley Thompson, as a teenager, sang "Mingelwood Blues" with Gus Cannons Jug Stompers. But his story ended there until Bengt found him and recorded a set of songs that showcase a Thompson whose voice is now one with the gentle angels. Bishop Perry Tillis left the blues circuit, believing it to be tied with the devil, and went back home to preach. Thee recordings Bengt made of him preserved a legacy that is ever growing today. Jugsmen Dewey Corley and Walter Miller might have been the most well known of Bengts subjects, yet there recordings for him carry with them a deep purity that has rarely been heard before. Wolf's At The Door is eerie, celebratory, dark and redemptive, fragile, lonely and scandalous. It is about drunken revelers at a bootleggers house telling dirty jokes while teaching each other a four-part harmony to a gospel standard. It is the underbelly of the underbelly and all these tracks are presented here for the first time ever. Featuring: Lum Guffin, Walter Miller, Bishop Perry Tillis, Cleo Williams & Howard Williams, Ashley Thompson, Joe Thownsend & Bill Barth, Dewey Corley & Walter Miller, Bootlegger's Quartet, Lattie Murrell, David Johnson & Guitar Sam, Lonnie Fuqua and David Johnson.
