62 - SUUMHOW - CRASH_REPORTS - (CD)
N5MD

Crash_Reports is the debut album from Brussel based emotive experimental duo Suumhow. Heavy on glitch, DSP, modular synthesis and circuit bent analog video mixers Crash_Reports has an air of late 90s / early oughts junked-up IDM nostalgia. Suumhow chew up beats with little or no regard for their original structure only to reveal newer forms within the outboard gear mangling. The duo also are adept at adding some humanistic warmth by way of carefully chosen melodies. Crash_Reports could be somewhat demanding listening at face value but the aural rewards that the duo thoughtfully reveal in each track is well worth repeated listens.Limited Edition Gatefold Compact Disc.

63 - SUUMHOW - SECUUND - (CD)
N5MD

Sophmore album from Belgian IDM duo Suumhow For Fans of: Autechre, Gridlock, Richard Devine This album is follow-up to last year's debut offering from Suumhow called Crash_Reports finds the pair doubling down on their blisteringly crunchy beat work and warm, humanistic melodies. While the beat-work on the album's opening track can lean toward the aggressive, making things feel as if all is about to teeter out of control, the thoughtful melodic touches in the synths keep the structure elasti- cally tethered together. Exceptions to that rule of thumb exist on Secuund with warm ambient track West Bend, the BOC-esque Bora Bora, and the durable onward animation of Cabin. Such diversity in Suumhow's experimentation makes Secuund an excellent listen for fans of late 90s, early ought IDM, glitch & ambient.

65 - TANGENT - APPROACHING COMPLEXITY - (CD)
N5MD

Approaching Complexity is the fourth album from Netherlands based ambient-beats duo Tangent. This follow-up to 2016s Collapsing Horizons finds the duo expanding their sound by adding reoccurring expressive piano themes to their composite of skyward ambience and unfolding beat formations. The album is said by the duo of Ralph van Reijendam and Robbert Kok to be "about the transition from basic forms to complex struc- tures which are often seen in nature during the transi- tioning of seasons." They add that "Life awakens from hibernation and evolves from being introverted to becoming extroverted, even building upon the remnants of previous cycles and evolving into new realms." Approaching Complexity for Tangent is all about their evolution as progression has been a clearly defined constant in their output as a whole. Each work effort- lessly transitioning unto its predecessor.

67 - TANGENT - COLLAPSING HORIZONS - (CD)
N5MD

This album much like the two preceding it-2013s "1mk2" (Mindtrick) and 2014s "Transience" (Tympanik)- is a sonic journey with arching atmospheres and themes. An aural representation of the formation of matter and it's disintegration in unison. The music, much as the album's namesake, could very well be the soundtrack to new universes being created on the ashes of collapsing ones. Ralph van Reijendam and Robbert Kok who are the two behind Tangent moonlight in a long list of paradoxical musical projects. Fire Walk with Us, Rob Klerkx and the Secret, Disavowed, and Synesis Absorption are all quite different from Tangent's sprawling yet steady ambience. This such daily musical juxtaposition allows Tangent the immersive focus on the ideas that make Tangent what it is. It would be a misnomer to think that with all the extra curricular time spent in more extreme forms of music that Tangent is a frenetic force. They are exactly the opposite. Dense pads, rolling beats and brilliant shimmers of resonance punctuate their electronic based instrumentals in just the correct manner to stargaze, day-dream, bliss-out, or even brood about starting over...

TRACKLISTING: 01. Perceived Horizon 02. Dawn 03. Gravitational Singularity 04. Immutable Surface 05. Tectonic Shift 06. Hyperbolic Motion 07. Ascending Awareness 08. Distorted Perspective 09. Fracture 10. Dissolution 11. Inward Collapse

69 - TO DESTROY A CITY - GO MIRAGE - (CD)
N5MD

Go Mirage is the 3rd full-length album from Chicago cinematic-rock trio To Destroy A City. This follow-up to 2014's post-rock paragon SUNLESS has an added immediacy due to the soaring nature of guitarist Michael Marshall's step toward the mic. Yes... There are vocals! Post-rock for the most part, has mainly utilized vocals as a texture or afterthought. Yet, To Destroy A City have adeptly included vocals into their cinematic tapestries with ease, and in the process added another layer of melody, modesty, and a surprising sense of hope to their already affecting guitar-driven compositions. There is an air of instant gratification with Go Mirage. It seems to push you forward to the next horizon, much as its title might suggest. Idealists might bark that To Destroy A City can't continue to fly the post-rock flag with such a vocalic album. The enlightened will find that the addition of vocals places the band as contemporaries to artists such as Caspian, Mogwai, and Album Leaf which have effectively used vocals as key components in their music.

TRACKLISTING: 01. Final Kiss 02. Never To Return 03. Beholder 04. Glance 05. Wavelength 06. She Knows 07. Go Mirage 08. Dont Be Afraid 09. Vanishing Point

71 - TO DESTROY A CITY - SUNLESS - (CD)
N5MD

Sophomore albums can be a tough proposition, often created in a much shorter time span than the years of refinement most debut albums receive. Chicago based trio To Destroy A City dropped such a perfected debut in 2011 that fans have collectively held their breath for a follow-up. However, unlike some artists who rush into the studio to complete their sophomore release, TDAC has taken nearly three years to craft their follow-up: SUNLESS. The time and effort shows in the nine cinematically crafted tracks. At times SUNLESS is more electronic leaning than its predecessor, yet is still punctuated with sheets of glacially emotive guitar-work. Intricate electronic beats give way to propulsive live drumming. The synths, while more prominent this time out, fit effortlessly into the TDAC framework. SUNLESS is an album of contrasting moods, though the trio transitions between these moods more gently than their peers. A must-have for fans of God is an Astronaut, Hammock, and Lights Out Asia.

TRACKLISTING: 01. The Messenger 02. Theta 03. Stand Before Me 04. Escape/return 05. Last Contact 06. First Light 07. Understanding In The Between 08. Daylight Station 09. Visionaries

74 - VITTORIA FLEET - GREED LP - (CD)
N5MD

album starts off in a similar vein as their debut Acht LP then very carefully with the aptly named composition "The Shape Of Things To Come" morphs into micro-tonally contorted electro with some seriously infectious vocal treatments by Giada Zerbo. The album progresses as such in a way that there is enough experimentation to keep things texturally alluring while Zerbo holds things together with her warm and comforting vocals. This is the most evident on album apex cut "Like Glue".

75 - WINTERLIGHT - THE LONGEST SLEEP THROUGH THE DARKEST DAYS - (CD)
N5MD

* "The Longest Sleep Through The Darkest Days" is the sophomore album from Plymouth shoegaze post-pop electronic project Winterlight. The project was originally a solo endeavor started by Tim Ingham back in the mid-oughts but now sees his daughter Isabel taking on bass guitar duties. * This new album is the culmination of nearly seven years of on and off creative spurts, false starts, and second guesses reflecting the turmoil hinted at in the albums title. Yet those that follow Winterlight know Tims been making music pretty much all along and releasing occasional demos via his Soundcloud.* This lengthy process has yielded one resounding result: If it ain't broke, don't fix it. "The Longest Sleep Through The Darkest Days" has all the Winterlight earmarks: divine organs, thoughtfully constructed drums, the occasional electronic flourish and, Oh... Those immaculately soaring guitars! While Ingham considers Winterlight to be post-pop, and for the most part the duo still brings those melodies to the table in spades, there are some unique changes happening under the surface in the album's bookends that move way beyond simple ear candy. This shows The Inghams are starting to take risks while still staying true to the original vision for the project.

TRACKLISTING: 01. Calm Then A Storm 02. I Can't Start Being Happy For Feeling Sad 03. Risen Again 04. Stretch Out And Away I Go 05. Hinterland 06. The Closer We Come 07. The Longest Sleep

77 - ZAHN/HATAMI/MCCLURE - YPSILON - (CD)
N5MD

The trio have also worked together on numerous collaborative projects between each other as duos, and "Ypsilon" album finds them back together, ever expanding their shared aural ideology into new territories. Their 2016 release, "Veerian," [eilean rec.] focused on free-flowing soundscapes, whereas this new album incorporates more overtly melodic sequences and rhythmic elements to widen its horizon. As on "Veerian," Zahn, Hatami, and McClure paid meticulous attention to sound design for "Ypsilon." The inclusion of subdued beats adds a swing to the textural layers, and arpeggiat- ed sequences imply rhythm and momentum. Other tracks remain blissfully ambient, taking time to unfold and breathe without any rhythmic framework. This balance between gentle propulsion and beatless sound- scapes, melodic and ambient, lends the album a unique character and takes it into fresh new areas of experimentation for the trio.
